macOS is the operating system that every Mac ships with.
It's simply the best operating system out there!
The version that your Mac comes with from day 1 is typically the one that is the most "up to date" at the time of manufacture. Over time, updates developed for macOS are provided free of charge to all compatible Mac computers.
These updates come in 2 forms: upgrades and updates. An "upgrade" is a major OS version change, such as macOS 10.14 ("Mojave) to macOS 10.15 ("Catalina"). On the other hand, an "update" is typically more minor in terms of what it offers, and keeps your Mac within its current OS, such as macOS 10.14.3 ("Mojave") to macOS 10.14.4 (a more recent version of "Mojave").
We typically advise that you avoid any OS upgrades during a school year. Updates on the other hand are often OK to proceed with, as they are more minor. That being said, please don't hesitate to contact us if you're unsure of how to proceed in this area.
