What is Adobe Creative Cloud?

While many people may be weary of any software that includes “cloud” in its name or function, think of Creative Cloud as a re-branding of the Adobe applications, similar to when they changed the name of their application bundle to “Creative Suite” in 2003. While Creative Cloud does offer a new distribution method for installing apps on personal systems, and the ability to synchronize preferences over the cloud, Macs at Sheridan College will largely not utilize these features. The applications have predominately stayed the same in both form and functionality, and anyone who has used Creative Suite and is comfortable with it will find little difference in using Creative Cloud.

Do I have to update to Creative Cloud?

The short answer is Yes.

There are many reasons why it is important to ensure that the software taught and used at Sheridan College is current, and all Mac Labs at Sheridan will have Creative Cloud installed on them. While it is possible to save some Creative Cloud documents to open in Creative Suite, some information and features are lost when downgrading a document. In order to be able to open student work properly, you will need to have Creative Cloud installed on your system. It is also important that the same version of software be installed on both Lab and Portable Macs so that tutorials and technical demonstrations are consistent.

When will Creative Cloud be available for the Sheridan Community?

The Mac Labs will have Creative Cloud available after they are re-imaged starting August 18th. Different Labs may be imaged sometime later in August, but all Labs will have Creative Cloud installed and ready to use before the start of the Fall Term.

Sheridan MacBooks will have Creative Cloud available to be installed the morning of August 18th.

How do I install Creative Cloud on my Sheridan MacBook?

Creative Cloud can only be installed on your system when you are on Campus and your MacBook is connected to the Sheridan Network.

It will be installed via the "Managed Software Update" App. All MacBooks issued by Sheridan should have this application installed and configured. You can find the app by clicking the Spotlight icon on the top right of your screen (magnifying glass) and typing in "Managed". Launching the Application will look up all available updates for your system, download them and present them in a list with the option to "Update now" or "Later". When presented with the installation options, it is best to "Log out and update".

The Managed Software Update App should be run regularly to keep your system up to date, and will notify you if new updates are available. If you have not installed updates regularly, it may take several rounds for the items "Adobe CC - Portable Installer" and "Adobe CC - Extras" to appear on the list. Once you have completed the install of all updates, Creative Cloud and all its additional tools should be available in the Applications folder of your Mac.

Note: The installation takes approximately 30 minutes to install.

Do I have to uninstall Creative Suite for Creative Cloud to work?

It is recommended to uninstall Creative Suite on your Mac.

While Creative Cloud will work with Creative Suite still installed, it is possible that the applications and their resources will conflict with each other and cause long term issues.

To uninstall Creative Suite, find any Adobe CS6 Application in your Applications folder on your Mac (for example, "Adobe Photoshop CS6") and open the "Uninstall Adobe ... CS6" application inside. This will actually launch the Adobe Application Manager that will uninstall all Creative Suite apps by default.

Will anything happen to my Adobe files?

Installing Creative Cloud should not affect any of your Adobe files on your system. Once any document has been opened and saved in a Creative Cloud application, it will not be compatible with older versions of Creative Suite (similar to trying to open a CS6 document in CS4). Adobe Documents can be downgraded with some features lost. Creative Cloud does not save to any cloud device or storage by default and continues to behave the same way as Creative Suite when saving your documents by choosing a location on your computer.

When running the Adobe Application Manager to uninstall CS6, you can choose to "Remove Preferences" if you want Creative Cloud to not have any of the preferences saved from CS6. If you have spent time customizing your Creative Suite experience, make sure this is left unchecked.
